Custom Button Ordering at Extron Electronics

The Challenge

A new web-based ordering experience was needed to replace the previous process of faxing an order form. Customers can now customize and purchase product buttons for their hardware.

The Solution

I worked collaboratively with a visual designer and developer to evaluate and influence the design. Research focused on gaining a solid understanding of customer button purchasing and the tasks of the primary users (design engineers). For the first time at Extron existing customers were tested using the prototype. The new workflow allowed customers to review their button designs and a bill of materials before placing their order.
Inspired by research, the design went through 4 iterations.

Project tasks included writing test plans, recruiting test participants, creating a clickable prototype (with the visual designer), conducting remote usability sessions and synthesizing the findings into a visual report.
